Wauconda's Wedl a hit at shortstop for UIC

Not only did her team take a firm grasp on first place in the Horizon League, but former Wauconda standout Kayla Wedl also earned the title of Louisville Slugger/ National Fastpitch Coaches Association's National Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

The Illinois-Chicago sophomore shortstop gained the national recognition after an impressive offensive output that included 4 home runs, 12 hits, 3 doubles and 18 RBI as she was instrumental in the Flames' undefeated week with sweeps over IUPUI and Northern Kentucky.

Against IUPUI (April 10-11), Wedl hit .500 with 4 hits, three of which were home runs. She collected 7 RBI and capped the series with a 1.750 slugging percentage and a .556 on base percentage.

In the Northern Kentucky series (April 13-14), Wedl belted her first career grand slam and finished the three-game set with an impressive .800 average to go along with 8 hits and 11 RBI. She also hit a pair of doubles, drew 3 walks and ended the series with a 1.300 slugging percentage and a .846 on base percentage.

Men's volleyball

Libertyville graduate Kyle Winiger and his Ohio State club volleyball team took second place in the National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championship in St. Louis. Winiger was voted a second-team all-American.

Men's track

Augustana senior Kevin Barbian (Libertyville) was second in the discus (163-6) and third in the shot put (52-1¼) as the Vikings won the championship at the Meet of Champions at Paul V. Olsen Track.

Football

Round Lake senior Brett Kneeland has made a verbal commitment to play at Augustana.

The 5-foot-9, 210-pound linebacker and wide receiver was a team captain, defensive MVP and a second-team All-Northern Lake County Conference selection for coach Cristo Garza's Panthers this past fall.

He recorded over 70 tackles, including 4 sacks. He forced two fumbles and scored 3 touchdowns.

Kneeland was a letter winner in track and field at Round Lake in addition to competing in basketball and rugby.

He is planning on education and psychology majors at Augustana.

The Vikings program has won four NCAA Division III national championships, 21 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin titles, 23 CCIW Players of the Year and 33 Academic All-America selections.

Men's basketball

Mundelein 6-foot-8 senior center Andrew Silva, a Daily Herald all-area honorable mention selection, has committed to Aurora University.

Magiera recognized

Augustana senior Nathan Magiera (Wauconda) is an inductee to this year's Hampshire Honor Society and the organization's 12th class as it was announced by The National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame.

He was honored for having maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better throughout his collegiate career.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Magiera moved to offensive guard this fall after three seasons at defensive end. He helped the Vikings more than double their rushing production from the previous year.

Magiera closed his career with 13 solo tackles, 31 total stops, 7½ tackles for loss and 2½ sacks.

He sports a 3.66 GPA with majors in business management and environmental sciences.

Men's tennis

Augustana senior Eric Pohl (Fremd) and teammate Samuel Totten won their 63rd career match together to pass Steve Miller.

and John Jevitz (1978-82) as the winningest doubles combo in school history. The Vikings defeated Illinois Wesleyan 9-0 and North Central 8-1 to move to 12-8 on the season and 3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Women's track and field

Augustana senior Emily Webster (Lakes) placed seventh in the shot with a toss of 39-8½ at the 13-team Viking Invitational in Rock Island where the Vikings placed second behind Wisconsin-Whitewater. Vikings junior Mackenzie Renihan (Vernon Hills) was eighth in the 5,000 (19:00.26).

Gurnee Park district

Gurnee Park District is accepting registrations for its 2018 adult softball leagues. Men's 12-inch leagues are offered Monday or Tuesday night. All games are played at Viking Park.
