Softball: Antioch walks off with 3 Dawg Daze wins
Megan Lawrence's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Antioch's softball team a 5-4, walk-off win over Dakota and championship of the Byron Dawg Daze tournament on Saturday.
Antioch (8-5) won all three of their 5-inning contests, giving the Sequoits a four-game winning streak and eight wins in their last nine games.
Piper Foote's RBI double tied the score in the fifth. Foote and Abby Pyburn were both 2-for-2 for Antioch, and Kaylee Schreiner was 2-for-3. Ashlyn Sundell and Schreiner started the fifth-inning rally with singles. Lawrence had an RBI double earlier, as the Sequoits erased a 4-0 deficit.
Mollie Wagner pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief and allowed only 1 hit in earning the win.
Antioch started the day by beating Genoa-Kingston 14-1 (four innings), before defeating Rockford Boylan 4-1.
Foote homered and drove in 3 runs against Genoa-Kingston. Sundell (3 RBI, stolen base) and Schreiner (triple, RBI, stolen base) were both 3-for-3. Lawrence (3 RBI) and Avery Malicki were both 2-for-2, and freshman Hailey Webb had a triple and 2 RBI.
Jerianne Bonaguidi pitched 3 innings for the win.
Antioch received 2-for-2 efforts from Sundell, Pyburn (double) and Deighton Butenschoen (triple, double, RBI) against Rockford Boylan. Lawrence tripled, and Bonaguidi pitched all 5 innings, striking out five and allowing 2 hits.
Carmel wins twice: The Corsairs won a pair of nonconference games on their home field against Wisconsin opponents, beating Westosha Central 8-7 and Tremper 10-4 to improve to 12-4.
Freshman Hailie Swiatkowski delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh against Westosha Central. Sydney Schuda (7-3) allowed 1 earned run and struck out nine in a complete-game effort. Marla Walinski was 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI, and Jessica Dettwiller went 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored.
Walinski (4-1) was the Game-2 winner, allowing 1 earned run and 4 hits in a complete-game performance. Jordan Swiatkowski hit a 2-run homer, Allison Novak was 3-for-4, Emy Krysa went 2-for-2 with 2 doubles, and Aleigha McNulty had a double and 2 RBI.
Wauconda 15, Buffalo Grove 8: Wauconda was up 7-1 after the first inning.
Angelica Cho had had 3 RBI for the Bulldogs while Hannah Miller, Maggie Bunefas and Kelly Weller each had 2 RBI.
Sydney Rodgers and Kayla Serio doubled for Wauconda.
Serio was also the winning pitcher.
Grayslake Central 7, Maine West 1: Elisabeth Koshy and Morgan Smigielski both smacked home runs for Grayslake Central. Koshy finished with 3 hits and 3 RBI while Smigielski had 2 hits and 4 RBI.
Grace Bradley had 3 hits, including a triple and winning pitcher Corinne Heidloff gave up only 1 walk in seven innings. Offensively, she had 2 hits.
Grayslake Central also played Palatine and lost 10-1. Smigielski homered for the Rams.
Vernon Hills and Lake Zurich split: Vernon Hills defeated Lake Zurich 7-2 while Lake Zurich got a 10-9 win.
In Lake Zurich's win, Haley Gajewski had 2 hits, including a home run.
For Vernon Hills, Delaney Bowen had 3 hits, including a double and a triple.
Libertyville wins 2: At the Libertyville Quad, the host Wildcats defeated McHenry, 8-7 and Fremd, 11-8.
Both were come from behind wins, and the McHenry win was the third in a row in that manner for Libertyville.
Amanda Page was the winning pitcher in both games. Against McHenry, she gave up no walks over four innings. Against Fremd she had 9 strikeouts in 7 innings.
Maggie Evers went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI against McHenry.
Sarah Hoyer added 2 hits and Christie Zhang had 2 RBI, including the game-winner.
Against Fremd, Hoyer had 3 hits and 2 RBI while Evers also had 2 RBI, including the game-winner.
Warren 11, Grayslake North 5: Winning pitcher Caitlyn Britton had 10 strikeouts in seven innings.
Warren got 2 hits apiece out of Claire Swedberg, Becca Geiyer and Kayla Nommensen.
Nommensen had a triple and a home run.
For Grayslake North, Jessia Pozezinski had 2 hits.
