Baseball: Stoffel's RBI single helps Palatine outlast Prospect
Luke Stoffel's one-out line drive single to right field brought in Jack Betz with the game's only run as visiting Palatine outlasted Prospect 1-0 in eight innings of Mid-Suburban League baseball Friday.
Palatine starter Jason Rivera and his counterpart, Prospect's Ryan Howe, were both dominant through 7 innings.
Rivera got the win after allowing 4 hits and 4 walks with 5 strikeouts through 7⅓ innings. Thomas Soby got the final two outs to earn a save.
Howe allowed only 2 hits through 7⅓ with 12 strikeouts but was charged with the decisive run.
TJ Skelnik had a hit for Palatine (11-7, 3-2).
Howe also led the way the plate for Prospect (6-6, 0-3) in a 3-for-4 performance. Anthony Catalano contributed a double, and Anthony Composto also had a hit.
Maine West 4, Niles West 0: The host Warriors got a two-pitcher shutout in CSL North play to snap a five-game losing streak.
Josh Wastyn went the first 5⅓ innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts. Andrew Willett was perfect over the final 1⅔, strikeout out three and allowing no hits or walks.
Maine West (3-7) committed only 1 error and got 2-for-3 efforts from Cory Scholler and Matt Johnston, along with a double from Jacob Cabral. Matt Mustari and David Roscoe each drove in 1 run.
Barrington 5, Wheeling 4: The host Wildcats jumped ahead by a run with a 4-run rally in the fourth inning, but the Broncos reclaimed the lead with a 2-run fifth and held on the rest of the way with strong bullpen work.
Clark Elliott finished 3-for-4 with a double and 3 runs scored to help keep Barrington (9-2-2, 5-0) unbeaten in the MSL.
David Mitchell (3-for-4, RBI) and Michael Zavoli (2-for-3, 2 RBI) also had doubles for the Broncos.
Cade Zalewski finished 2-for-3 for Wheeling, and Kyle Bullock produced a double.
Jake Meyer tossed 2 scoreless innings of relief and got the win, and teammate Nate Holler got a save with 1 scoreless inning.
Hersey 11, Hoffman Estates 4: The host Huskies won for the third time in their last four games as eight different players drove in at least 1 run.
Daniel Clawson led the way, finishing 2-for-2 with a homer and a double plus 2 walks. James Denten (2-for-3) tripled and drove in 2 runs, Cristian Rodriguez had 2 RBI and Luke Picchiotti went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Getting single RBI were AJ Ceffalio, Cade O'Neal, Will Adamski, and Hunter Luke.
Luke allowed 11 hits through 6 innings but only 2 earned runs in gaining the pitching decision for Hersey (6-9-1, 3-2).
Senior Dylan Bloom finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, Jim Kliver went 3-for-4 and Richie Banas hit a solo homer for Hoffman Estates.
Rolling Meadows 9, Schaumburg 2: Matt Lothery led a 10-hit effort for the host Mustangs by finishing 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI in MSL action.
Jack Kane drove in 3 runs and Javonte Jones-Warner 2 for Meadows (4-5-2, 2-2).
Ryan Lane pitched 6 effective innings to earn his first win of the season, and Kane also pitched 1 scoreless inning.
Elk Grove 12, Fremd 2: Nick Hofmann was a terror at the top of the order for Elk Grove, finishing 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, a steal and 3 RBI as the host Grens picked up an MSL triumph.
Elk Grove (4-4-1, 2-0) also got big games from Zack Schwartz (2-for-4, 3 RBI), Ryne Singsank (2-for-3) and Justin Post (double).
Xander Rojahn picked up the win after tossing 4 scoreless innings with 3 hits and 7 strikeouts.
Fremd leadoff man Tommy Wingen finished 2-for-3; both hits were doubles.
