Saint Anne takes top honors at Scholastic Bowl

On Saturday, March 17, Saint Anne Parish School, Barrington, sent three teams to compete in the Station Campus Scholastic Bowl Invitational.

This invitational is the largest in Illinois with a total of 58 teams competing in three divisions. Playing in the Standard Division, the Saint Anne A team bested 31 other teams to finish 9-0.

It was a strong team showing, as all five players averaged in double figures. Emily Nakiganda received top individual honors for the team, but it was Julia Benkendorf who rescued the Cardinals from a 20-point deficit in Match 7.

The Saint Anne number two team, captained by Mitch Purcell, also put in a strong showing by winning its last six matches. The third team, led by captain Mac Herran, finished well by winning its last two matches.

The winning team consisted of Julia Benkendorf, Tyler Hoffman, Peter Maestranzi, Emily Nakiganda and Tommy Sneed.

The Saint Anne Scholastic Team Program has been developed to harness the intellectual abilities and deepen the skills the students are learning in the classroom. This program is available to the sixth- through eighth-grade students and events are held during or after school and on Saturdays at various locations throughout the Chicago area.

Practices include skill building in understanding how to breakdown questions, use deductive reasoning, and create relationship with information. The head coach is Terry Ehardt.

The Saint Anne Scholastic Bowl Team has won many first-place awards, competing in Scholastic Bowls in the area. This win at Station Middle School District Scholastic Bowl in March is the most recent win.
