35-year sentence for Rolling Meadows man who sexually abused girl

A Rolling Meadows man accused of sexually abusing a young girl over several years beginning when she was 10 years old pleaded guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault.

Denis Hernandez, 45, was sentenced Monday to 35 years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to the class X felony.

Hernandez, who has been in custody since his arrest in September 2015, was also ordered to register for the rest of his life as a sex offender, according to Cook County assistant state's attorney Shilpa Patel.

Hernandez, who received credit for the time he has already spent in custody, must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Prosecutors said Hernandez abused the victim from 2012 to 2015. They say Hernandez apologized after the victim's family confronted him about the allegations. That apology was recorded on cellphone video, prosecutors said during Hernandez's bond hearing.

Patel said the victim and her family were satisfied with the sentence.
