Softball: Mazur making home run history at Fremd

Fremd softball coach Josh Teschner says the best thing about Jess Mazur's offensive skills are that every at-bat is meaningful to her.

"They're not just her looking for stats," said the second-year coach. "She is looking to help the team. That's one of the things you get out of Jess Mazur. She wants to make sure she has a great at-bat to help her team. That's the simplest way to put it."

Simply put, Mazur showed why again she is one of the all time top sluggers in program history.

Mazur had a grand time in the only game in town for Mid-Suburban League softball action on Friday as she lined a shot over the left field fence with bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning.

Mazur's grand slam highlighted the Vikings' 12-2 five-inning triumph over visiting Wheeling and it moved the Georgia Southern recruit into a tie with Megan Hubbard (21) for the school's all-time record for home runs.

"I didn't think this would ever happen," said Mazur a four-year starter who also passed Illinois star shortstop Leigh Farina this week for second-most RBI all time at Fremd (122). "I'm just here to play for the team.

"It's really exciting. I've worked really hard and have so many people help me train me to get to this point. And my team has set me up very nicely to do it."

Mazur's team improved to 6-2 on Friday and 2-1 in the MSL West.

Junior Hailey Hazlett (1-0) earned her first varsity win, tossing a 4-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

"With these nasty, muddy conditions, Hailey did an incredible job," Teschner said. "She had incredible perseverance, throwing strikes and trusting her defense. It was fun to watch."

Lexi D'Ambrosio was Fremd's only multiple hitter (her third time this season) as the senior receiver went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run.

Seniors Hannah Ban, Anna Freveletti (2-run double) and Bella Wojcik also had hits for the Vikings.

Senior Karsyn Burgess went 2-for-2 for the Wildcats (0-4, 0-3) while teammates Nicolette Ferraro and Rebecca McAtee had 1 hit apiece.
