Libertyville Township High School's Class of 1939 had its own power couple

• The following is part of an ongoing series of articles in celebration of Libertyville High School's 100th anniversary.

Norm Enevold and Hazel Getchell were Libertyville Township High School Class of 1939 sweethearts who would win just about every honor one could during their senior years. These two went on to have a 62-year marriage.

Norm earned a lot of his honors in athletics. He played football, basketball, and ran the sprints in track. He earned 11 varsity letters. The only year he didn't earn a varsity letter was his sophomore year when he was the captain of the JV basketball team.

In football, he was an All-County running back for the 1938 conference champions, also doing the place kicking. He earned All-County honors as a guard in basketball. He was the track conference and county champion in the 100-yard dash and long jump. He just missed going to state as he took third in the sectionals in the 100 and fourth in the 220 (only the top two in the sectional qualified for state). He held the school record in the 200-yard low hurdles when he graduated and was the captain of the track team. For his athletic efforts Norm was named the Male Newsom Award winner as the top athlete in the senior class.

Hazel didn't have nearly as many opportunities in athletics as Norm did. Nonetheless, through her efforts in the Girls Athletic Association she was named the Female Newsom Award winner. She was the band's drum major her junior and senior years. She was in the Pep Club. She was highly sought after for her piano playing skills, including playing the piano in the almost all-male Swing Band (they needed Hazel for the piano so they made one gender exception).

These two also excelled in the classroom. Norm earned the class Valedictorian honor, set the record for the annual school math contest, and was the senior class president. Both were members of the National Honor Society. Norm was named to the American Legion Award, Hazel was named the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, both awards going to the Best All-Around students.

After high school, Norm attended Stanford University and earned an engineering degree. After a post-college time in the Naval Reserve as a flight engineer, Norm came back to Libertyville in 1946 for a 35-year career with the Frank G. Hough Company, first as an engineer, finishing as a manager. After retirement Norm worked for 22 years with FEMA as a part-time manager of 58 on-the-scene disaster relief efforts. Hazel went to Oberlin (Ohio) College for a music degree, becoming an accomplished pianist.

The Enevolds were longtime members of the United Methodist Church in Libertyville and raised four boys, all LHS graduates; Jeff (Class of '65), Neil ('67), Brian ('72), and Dave ('74). All four were involved with athletics as well as music.
