Cougars two-hit River Bandits for second win

Davenport, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars used four pitchers to throw a combined two-hitter in a 3-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Cougars' (2-3) starter Jeff Bain allowed just one unearned run on two hits, while striking out five and walking six in 3.2 innings. Bain scattered a single in the first and another in the third before the Cougars turned it over to the bullpen. Those two singles were the only River Bandits hits of the night. Three Cougars relievers collaborated to hold Quad Cities (1-3) hitless for the final 5.1 innings.

Breckin Williams (1-0) earned his first career Midwest League win, striking out four over 2.1 perfect innings. Matt Brill struck out three of the six batters that he retired, issuing just one walk. Abraham Almonte (2) recorded the final three outs, earning the save.

Both teams traded scoreless innings until the top of the third. Cougars' outfielder Stephen Smith walked with one out. Jasrado Chisholm followed with a bunt single to put runners at first and second. The next batter, Luis Silverio, singled to center, driving in Smith to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. Yoel Yanqui made it 2-0 with an RBI ground out.

Jacob Meyers led off the Bandits fourth inning with a walk. On the next play, Cody Bohanek reached on a fielder's choice and Cougars' pitcher Jeff Bain committed a throwing error, putting runners at the corners with no one out. Bain induced a 3-4-1 double play, but Meyers scored from third to cut the lead to 2-1 Cougars.

The Cougars responded in the fifth with a lead off solo homer from Chisholm, his first of the year. It was Chisholm's second of three hits on the night.

J.B. Bukauskas took the loss for Quad Cities. Bukauskas (0-1) allowed two runs, three hits, struck out six and walked four over 3.2 innings. Carlos Sanabria allowed Chisholm's homer. Parker Mushinski tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless ball out of the Bandits pen and Collin McKee got the final two outs.

Game three of the four-game series is tonight at Modern Woodmen Park. The Cougars will send right-hander Jayson McKinley (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against the Bandits' righty Cesar Rosado (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
