Baseball: Plenty of offense for Fremd in West opener
Fremd's baseball team used a big fourth-inning rally to claim an 11-5 victory over host Palatine in a Mid-Suburban West divisional opener Tuesday.
Victor Fujio tossed a complete game for the Vikings (5-2, 1-0) and had mostly smooth sailing until Palatine plated 3 runs in the seventh. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks and struck out seven.
Tom Cermak and Alex Baraban had 2 hits apiece for Fremd. Luke Seidel hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, and Tommy Wingen and Brent Swenson also had hits in that frame.
TJ Skelnik got Palatine (8-5, 0-1) off to a quick start with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. He and Jack Hopper also doubled, and Jake Andersen contributed a solo homer and a pair of walks for the Pirates.
Rolling Meadows 7, Hersey 4: Nate Pardini doubled, scored twice and also was the pitcher of record as the visiting Mustangs began MSL East play with a victory.
Pardini pitched 4⅔ innings. Hersey scored 4 runs in the fifth inning, but Jack Kane got the final out in the frame and Meadows exited with a 5-4 lead.
The Mustangs (3-3-1, 1-0) got a couple of insurance runs in the seventh, and Kane finished with 2⅓ hitless relief innings to earn a save.
Hersey (3-8-1, 0-1) got much of its offensive production from Daniel Clawson, who had a pair of doubles and drove in 3 runs.
Conant 5, Schaumburg 4: The host Cougars made good use of their 5 hits, which included a solo homer by Tyler Hedman and a double from Sam Ryan, to get off to a winning start in MSL West play.
Teague Conrad started and tossed 6 innings of 3-hit ball with 6 strikeouts for Conant.
Schaumburg rallied in the seventh, finishing with 3 runs in the inning.
Nick Calip and Albert Kiszka finished with 2 hits apiece for the Saxons.
Buffalo Grove 16, Prospect 3 (6 inn.): In a game that was tied after 4 innings, the visiting Bison pulled away with a 7-run fifth and ended it early with a 6-run seventh.
Rio Komatani went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Carter Gledhill and Sean Jacobs drove in 2 runs apiece for the Bison (6-3, 1-0) in their MSL East opener. Riley Rundquist, Mac Camardo and Jacobs had 2 hits apiece, Camardo and Zach Fricke both doubled and the Bison were able to steal 7 bases.
TJ Constertina allowed 3 runs over 5 innings to get the win for BG.
Prospect got 2-hits from Johnny Czeslawski but was limited to 4 hits total.
Brother Rice 12, St. Viator 0 (5 inn.): The visiting Lions got just a single from Jack Mahoney in suffering a nonconference loss. Brother Rice produced 9 hits against the Lions (7-2).
Hoffman Estates 10, West Chicago 0 (5 inn.): Josh Magers doubled twice and drove in 4 runs from the leadoff spot to help the visiting Hawks roll in a nonconference contest.
Magers was also dominant on the mound. He went the full 5 innings and struck out nine while allowing 1 hit and 2 walks.
Tom Curcio, Dakota Slingerland and Kyle Krogstad each scored 2 runs apiece for the Hawks (3-3).
Christian Liberty 12, Northtown Academy 2: Breckin Aiello earned the pitching decision as the Chargers allowed 3 hits to their nonconference foe.
Ben Law's double was among 12 hits for Christian Liberty.
