Judge to rule on Chicago Police torture case

CHICAGO (AP) - The story of the most infamous detective unit in Chicago Police Department history will once again return to court when a judge decides if he believes a prison inmate was beaten 36 years ago into confessing to a double-murder he says he didn't commit.

On Thursday after a four-month hearing, Cook County Judge William Hooks indicated he may rule this summer on whether Jackie Wilson was beaten by detectives under the command of disgraced former Commander Jon Burge. Tossing Wilson's confession could win him a new trial. .

Wilson is one of scores of African-American men to accuse the white commander and his detectives of torturing them into confessing to homicides in the 1970s and 1980s. Several have been freed and their lawsuits have cost Chicago well over $100 million.
