Ex-northwestern Indiana officer sentenced in woman's death

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A former northwestern Indiana police officer has been sentenced to 55 years in prison in the slaying of the mother of three of his children.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports 33-year-old Kevin Campbell denied responsibility Friday before being sentenced. Campbell said he wouldn't rest until he finds the person responsible.

Tiara Thomas was found bleeding in November 2015 inside her Portage apartment and later died. Authorities have said phone records indicated Campbell and the 30-year-old Thomas argued over child support he paid and creditors were calling him.

Campbell formerly was a Gary officer and was fired by the Hammond Police Department days after Thomas' body was discovered.

Porter County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Matt Frost said all Campbell "has to do is look in the mirror" to find the killer.
