Wellness Center Hosts Watercolor Artist

Cheryl Calderon of Elk Grove Village loves the creative process of working with color in her art.

"It really moves me to work with color, because I love what the medium of watercolor can do that other mediums can't," says Calderon, who is exhibiting her watercolors, pastels, and mixed media through Saturday, July 7, at the Wellness Center of Northwest Community Hospital, 900 W. Central Rd., in Arlington Heights. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Northwest Cultural Council.

"There is magic in the way colors mix to create a new color," Calderon, who paints nature scenes, explains.

The artist says that it takes much trial and error to be creative, but she finds that the time spent provides her the greatest happiness and reward.

Calderon has taught art for much of her life, and many of her pieces are in private collections. Currently in retirement, Calderon is a student at Positive Strokes Art School and Gallery in Palatine where she takes watercolor classes and where she recently exhibited.

"I continue to evolve and grow," Calderon explains. "I credit my teachers and fellow students as my greatest inspiration."

An Illinois native, the artist first taught in Wisconsin at Menominee Indian High School and the Sacred Heart Academy in Oneida, after having received degrees in visual arts and art education at the University of Wisconsin.

The artist returned to Illinois in 1982 and has taught adult classes in drawing, pastels, and watercolor, also having pursued a career in graphic arts and healthcare.

The Northwest Cultural Council serving the Northwest corridor, is a non-profit organization. It supports and promotes the work of area visual artists and poets, offering a variety of programs including corporate gallery exhibitions, co-sponsored by businesses, convention and visitors' bureaus, libraries, and hospitals; art competitions to stimulate and encourage artists; and poetry workshops and readings.

The NWCC also organizes receptions for artists, free and open to the public.
