Baseball: Wingen cycles Fremd to a comeback victory

Tommy Wingen was a one-man force for Fremd out of the leadoff spot, finishing 4-for-4 and hitting for the cycle as the Vikings' baseball team came from behind to beat Glenbrook South 8-7 on Monday at Heritage Park in Wheeling.

Wingen doubled in the first, homered in the third, singled in the fifth and tripled in the sixth inning as the host Vikings won a nonconference contest. He finished with 4 RBI.

Brent Swenson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth pushed across the go-ahead run and finished a 3-run rally.

Luke Seidel walked twice and stole 3 bases for Fremd (3-2).

Ashton Statz earned a victory in relief; he allowed 2 unearned runs over 3 innings.

Conant 12, Bartlett 6: Colin Broeker, Tyler Hedman and Matt Majer drove in 2 runs apiece to help Conant's baseball team pick up a victory over visiting Bartlett on Monday in nonconference play.

Broeker, Sam Ryan, Dave Sapyta and Christian Seegers each finished with 2 hits for Conant (2-5-1).

Majer earned the pitching decision and got quality relief support from both Luke Pontikis and Carl Zillinskas.

St. Viator 2, Elk Grove 0: Lions starter Bryce Hellgeth allowed just 1 hit with 8 strikeouts over 6 innings as host St. Viator prevailed in nonconference action.

Hunter Johnson pitched a scoreless final inning to earn a save for the Lions.

Matt Zawilenski homered, a solo shot in the fifth inning, to give St. Viator (5-1) its first longball of the season.

Matt Crimmins (double) and Zach Mahoney had the only hits for Elk Grove (2-4-1). Starter Ryne Singsank struck out 11 and allowed 4 hits in 5⅓ innings for the Grens.

Carmel 5, Prospect 4: The Corsairs got all their scoring in the first three innings and managed to hold off the host Knights in nonconference play.

Anthony Catalano and John Czeslawski both finished 2-for-4 and drove in 1 run apiece for Prospect (5-2).

Mack Malczewski (4 IP) and Czeslawski (1 IP) provided scoreless relief stints for Prospect.

Rolling Meadows 6, Maine South 5: The visiting Mustangs scored in each of the first four innings and managed to hang on for a nonconference win.

Joe Marucci doubled and also scored twice as Rolling Meadows made great use of its 2 hits and 4 walks. Maine South helped the Mustangs' cause by committing 6 errors.

Brandon Janowicz drove in 2 runs for Meadows (2-3-1), while reliever Jack Kane earned the victory and Nate Pardini got a save after striking out four.
