Aurora man gets 13 years in crash that killed 9-year-old

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) - A 26-year-old man from suburban Chicago has been sentenced to 13 years in Illinois prison for an accident that killed a 9-year-old girl as she returned to her Aurora home from a play rehearsal.

Kane County prosecutors say Anthony S. Potochney of Aurora was sentenced Thursday in the October 2016 drunken driving crash that killed Katie Jonak. Potochney pleaded guilty in October to three counts of aggravated DUI and failure to stop after an accident involving injury or death.

Prosecutors say Potochney's car was going at least 75 mph when it veered into the wrong lane and struck a minivan driven by Jonak's mother. Two other children were injured. Potochney fled the scene but was arrested soon after. He will receive credit for 539 days served in the Kane County jail.
