Baseball: Stoffel pitches Grayslake Central to win in Florida finale
Clay Stoffel scattered 4 hits over 4 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out four, as Grayslake Central's baseball team concluded its annual Disney Trip with a 9-5 victory over Watertown Gossings (Wis.) in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday.
The Rams (5-0) went 4-0 playing at the ESPN Sports Complex.
Benton Troehler drove in 3 runs with a double, while Max Snowden and Clayton Bloemke (2 RBI) both had a pair of singles.
Grayslake Central broke open a 1-1 tie by scoring 4 runs in the fourth inning courtesy of Troehler's 3-RBI double and then 3 more runs in the fifth with Bloemke and Stoffel picking up RBI.
The Rams return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion-Benton.
Libertyville 11, Thunderbird 2: In Arizona, Tommy Rigali went 4-for-5 with a triple and 2 RBI, and Andrew Kim and Luke Plunkett homered for the Wildcats.
Riley Gowens struck out 10 in 5 scoreless innings. He allowed just 3 hits and didn't walk a batter, as Libertyville improved to 4-1.
Plunkett and Kim (double, 3 RBI) each had a pair of hits.
Lakes 2, IMG Academy 1: In their first of two games on the day, the Eagles got a combined two-hitter from Joe Glassey and EJ Roncone.
Glassey pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 run, while striking out nine and walking five. Roncone struck out three and walked one in 2 hitless innings.
Michael Behrendt (2-for-3), Carson Cobb (2-for-2) and Logan Mueller (1-for-3, 2 RBI) paced Lakes offensively.
Hialeah Educational Academy 12, Lakes 0: In their second game of the day, the Eagles managed just 3 hits in a four-inning defeat.
Eastern 8, Vernon Hills 2: In Kentucky, the host Eagles scored 6 runs in the bottom of the first off starter Caleb Thomson. Derek Jarrell threw the final 2⅓ innings, allowing no runs.
Jake Morris (2-for-2) hit a solo HR in the second for Vernon Hills (5-3). The Cougars had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth and the bases loaded in the seventh with no outs but scored only once.
Danny Wizceb (2-for-2, run), Jack Peterson (1-for-1, double, 2 walks) and Josh Liu (1-for-2, double) also contributed hits for Vernon Hills.
Wauconda 9, Cary-Grove 9: At Rent One Park in downstate Marion, the Bulldogs and Trojans settled for a tie in a game called after five innings due to inclement weather.
Danny Sperling (triple, double, 3 RBI) and Brock Glavey (triple, 3 RBI) each had 2 hits for Wauconda. Jake Harmon was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Warren 12, Prairie Ridge 6: In downstate Marion, the Blue Devils were led offensively by Sam Deluca (triple), Bradley Vondruska (2-for-3) and Danny Ahn (2-for-4).
Evan Hill picked up the win, as Warren improved to 5-1.
Stevenson 6, Neenah 6: In Vero Beach, Fla., in their first of two games on the day, the Patriots settled for an eight-inning tie.
Stevenson was led offensively by Jack Housinger (2-for-3), Ryan McElhinny (double), Michael D'Angelo (triple, 2 RBI) and Nick Bonk (single, 2 RBI).
Westminster Christian 10, Stevenson 7: In Vero Beach, Fla., in the second of two games on the day, the Patriots came up short.
Michael D'Angelo was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Stevenson. Jack Housinger tripled and drove in 3 runs, and Isaiah Hart and Zachary Taylor each had 2 hits and an RBI.
