Celebrate skills, devotion of nurses

Advocate Sherman Hospital celebrated Certified Nurses Day, March 19, by honoring our nurses who have achieved national board certification. Board certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Certification is formal recognition of a nurse's specialized knowledge, skill, experience and competency and is earned after meeting defined eligibility criteria and successful completion of a rigorous examination.

Nursing, like health care in general, has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse. Advocate Sherman Hospital encourages national board certification for all its nurses, and we currently have 221 certified nurses, which includes clinical nurses and nursing leaders. Patients are encouraged to inquire whether there are certified nurses on staff when they visit a hospital or their primary care provider.

As we remember Certified Nurses Day, I want to express my gratitude and esteem to each and all our nurses who have achieved national board certification in their specialty. Please join Advocate Sherman Hospital and the nation's national nursing certification organizations in honoring those hardworking, dedicated nurses for their professionalism and a job well done!
