Baseball: Wheeling works five innings for win
Wheeling's baseball team raised its record to 3-0 with a 16-3, five-inning nonconference victory over Grayslake North on Wednesday.
Patrick Cooney worked all five innings to gain the win for Wheeling which was led on offense by Drew Roberts (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Andy Shover (3-for-3, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Cade Zalewski (1-for-2, 3 RBI) and Kevin Pavia (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
DJ Godlewski and Cade Kaplan both scored twice for Wheeling, while teammate Kyle Bullock made two standout diving catches center field to help out Cooney, who tossed a 4 hitter.
The Wildcats scored all their run in two innings, getting 6 in the second and 10 in the fourth.
Schaumburg 9, Dundee-Crown 3: Jake Golliher went 3⅔ innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and striking out three to gain the nonconference win. Pitchers Tyler Slome and Peter Kandefer closed out the game for the Saxons. Schaumburg collected 8 hits, including 2 apiece from Jack Lancaster and Joe Unger.
Palatine 6, Prairie Ridge 5: Palatine won the nonconference game with a run on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning and improved its record perfect to 5-1.
Josh Stitt earned the win, surrendering no run on 2 hits over 3 innings while striking out four, and TJ Skelnik, Brent Penrose and Luke Stoffel each doubled in an 11-hit attack for Palatine.
Jack Hopper finished 3-for-4 at the plate, and Stoffel was 2-for-4 with a steal.
