Palatine woman admits stealing more than $97,000 from 81-year-old

A Palatine woman was sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to stealing more than $97,000 from an 81-year-old relative.

Candace Matranga-Perez, 37, was ordered Tuesday to continue drug and alcohol treatment and to undergo a mental health evaluation, court records show.

Prosecutors said Matranga-Perez used the victim's debit card and personal checks to take more than $97,000 from the woman's bank account between Dec. 15, 2016, and Feb. 14, 2017. Palatine police said she used the money to pay for more than 100 items, including an SUV.

Video surveillance and other evidence linked Matranga-Perez to the crime, said police, who became aware of the theft after another relative reported a "substantial" amount of money missing from the bank account.

Matranga-Perez was also ordered to pay $454 in fines, according to court records.
