Students compete in 2018 Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee
Eleven sixth- through eighth-grade students representing six area junior high and middle schools competed in the 36th annual Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee Feb. 10 at the KC Hall in Arlington Heights.
The first-place finisher was Katelyn Lee of Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights. Second place went to Christine Yuan of St. Mary School in Buffalo Grove, and the third-place finisher was Zach Greenwell of South Middle School in Arlington Heights.
The Bee used 154 words and lasted 23 rounds. Throughout the Bee, spellers traversed words such as clambering, alacrity, vociferous, stevedores, generalissimo, monomania, and tapirs.
The Bee concluded when Katelyn Lee spelled both voluminous and crematoria correctly to claim first place.
Schools and students participating in the Spelling Bee were:
• Arlington Heights: Our Lady of the Wayside School, Paige Longstreet and Drew Utech; St. Peter School, Cayden Hilgers and Eva Wickboldt; South Middle School, Zach Greenwell; and Thomas Middle School, Kaitlyn Lee and Akhil Ramidi.
• Buffalo Grove: St. Mary School, Audry Yang and Christine Yuan.
• Rolling Meadows: St. Colette School, Rebecca Harris and Nikki Shim.
The Bee was hosted by Holy Rosary Council #4483 of Arlington Heights, and co-sponsored with Our Lady of the Grove Council #13448 in Buffalo Grove.
All public and private junior high schools and middle schools serving Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Long Grove, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling were invited to send two representatives to participate.
