Lord & Taylor to close Oakbrook Center store

Upscale retailer Lord & Taylor is closing a second suburban store, this one at Oakbrook Center.

The Oak Brook store is slated to close in January when its lease expires, according to Lord & Taylor spokeswoman Meghan Biango.

The retailer announced about two months ago that it would close its store at Westfield Old Orchard Mall in Skokie in April.

"Through the regular course of business, we continually evaluate store performance and, from time to time, may determine it necessary to close a store," Biango said. "These decisions are never easy, but they are prudent for the company and we are committed to offering support and assistance to our team affected by the closing, including offering store associates transfer opportunities where available."

She said there are about 86 workers at the Oak Brook location.

Lord & Taylor also operates suburban stores at Northbrook Court and Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. The company, founded in 1826, is a subsidiary of Toronto-based Hudson's Bay, or HBC, which also owns Saks Fifth Avenue and Gilt Groupe.

The most recent store closings come as brick-and-mortar retailers across the U.S. are faced with a challenging industry that continues to shift more and more online.
