Be clear about shooter's problems

We deeply mourn the loss of the students and their teachers and coaches in Parkland, Florida. In the wake of this school shooting massacre, it has been reported that the killer had been diagnosed with a learning disability and suffered from ADHD and depression. We find the suggestion of a link between his diagnosis and this horrific act abhorrent and insulting, both to special education students and to the teachers and staff who work with them. We have a combined total of 64 years teaching special education students in elementary schools, high school and private schools, most of that time in Chicago. None of our students nor any of the other students at our schools ever became mass killers. Insanity drove this killer to do what he did, not being special ed. The comment shows a lack of awareness about what special education is.
