Sane returns for Manchester City 5 weeks ahead of schedule

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) - Manchester City winger Leroy Sane has recovered from his ankle injury five weeks ahead of schedule.

Sane was originally ruled out for up to seven weeks at the end of January after a late tackle from Cardiff defender Joe Bennett left the Germany international with ligament damage.

But the 22-year-old Sane is back after two weeks and has traveled with the Premier League leaders to Switzerland for the Champions League last 16 match against Basel on Tuesday.

"I'm surprised," City manager Pep Guardiola said Monday. "He has worked a lot, but I didn't expect with a young guy how professional he was.

"He is not in perfect condition but he is with us. He wants to help us. That is good news. He and the physios did a good job."

Manchester City's head coach Pep Guardiola attends a media conference about their upcoming UEFA Champions League round of sixteen first leg soccer match between Switzerland's FC Basel 1893 and England's Manchester City, at the St. Jakob-Park stadium in Basel, Switzerland, on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018.
