Boys & Girls Club of Elgin receives community impact grant from New York Life

The Boys & Girls Club of Elgin which enables all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens announced today that it was awarded a $15,000 Community Impact Grant from New York Life.

The grant will support Reading Success, which engages schoolteachers and administration staff along with club professionals to identify and target specific students who run the risk of not graduating from high school on time as a result of not performing at grade level in reading. The identified students will then spend the year in after-school tailored programs designed to close the reading gap.

"We are grateful for New York Life's investment in Reading Success, which will change many lives for the better," said Cathy Malkani, CEO. "Without the support from New York Life, we wouldn't be able to provide the tools and resources necessary to assist our members with reading and ultimately academic success."

"I'm proud to work for a company that encourages its agents and employees to devote their time, energy and talents to support the needs and priorities of their local community," said Amy True Flota, an agent affiliated with New York Life's Chicago General Office.

Flota's husband is the associate principal at Elgin High School and she is the third-generation New York Life agent with her father, Greg True, in his 52nd year with New York Life, "We are pleased that our partnership will have a long-lasting impact on Boys & Girls Club of Elgin and the population they serve."

The Community Impact Grant program awards grants of up to $25,000 to local nonprofit organizations which are championed by New York Life agents and employees to serve the needs of their local communities. Since the program's inception in 2008, 491 grants totaling more than $6.8 million have been awarded to nonprofits across the country.

Boys & Girls Club of Elgin serves over 2,000 youth ages 6 to 18 every year by providing them a safe place to go where they build confidence and achieve success. The club operates in 11 different locations for at least four hours a day and membership fees are kept low, just $25 year, to ensure all children can afford to belong. The primary outcomes include academic success, healthy lifestyles and character and leadership development.
