During Opening Ceremonies, Pyeongchang Organizing Committee computer servers hacked

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - As the Winter Olympics formally opened with Friday's Opening Ceremonies, the Pyeongchang Organizing Committee said its servers were being hacked by an unidentified attacker.

A spokesman offered few details at a news conference Saturday morning and said the committee is "investigating the cause of the issues."

"There were some issues that impacted some of our computer systems last night for a few hours," said Sung Baik-You, the committee spokesman. "We apologize for the inconvenience caused to all those affected. This has not disrupted any event or had any effect on the safety or security of any athletes or spectators."

The attack impacted internet and television services at the Main Press Center, according to Yonhap News Agency. Officials immediately shut down servers to limit the damage, which apparently led to the temporary shuttering of the Pyeongchang Olympics website. The Korean news service reported that spectators who purchased tickets to Olympic events were unable to print their reservations until the site came back online Saturday morning.

Sung said all Olympic events were running as scheduled Saturday.

"We are currently investigating the cause, and we'll share further information as we have more details," he said, reading from a prepared statement.
