'Beam signing' held for new Arlington Heights police station

Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes and village trustees signed their names to a steel beam Thursday before it was installed at the site of the new $27.9 million downtown police station.

The ceremony, held at the construction site at 200 E. Sigwalt St., signified completion of the police station's steel structure.

Construction on the two-level, 70,500-square-foot building started last summer, and is on track to be done in the fall. It will replace the former 38,000-square-foot cop shop that village officials said became cramped and outdated.

The police department is operating out of a temporary headquarters at 1500 W. Shure Drive.
