Historical museum presents 'Letters from the Heart'

The Arlington Heights Historical Museum will present a lecture titled "Letters from the Heart" from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the museum, 110 W. Fremont St., in Arlington Heights.

Author Dennis Depcik will share his story, recorded through letters, of an Army officer stationed in Europe and his sister-in-law's much younger sister.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Depcik describes how this pen pal relationship changed the girl from an "insignificant kid" to the most important person in his life, and the resulting relationship that grew from a high school girl's crush and a young man's reticence, to a marriage of 41 years and a love that stayed strong for a lifetime.

In one of Maggie's letters to Dennis in late February, 1967, she wrote, "Wouldn't it be something if someday (two centuries from now) someone discovered our letters to each other and wrote a novel about us?"

Well, he discovered those letters and wasn't about to let two centuries go by before that happened. So, he wrote the book "Wouldn't It Be Something," which is based on those letters.

Tickets are $10 for Arlington Heights residents, $13 for nonresidents. Historical Society members receive a discounted ticket price of $8. Appropriate for ages 14 and older.
