Chicago police say homicides, shootings fell in January
CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say the trend of falling homicides and shooting incidents in 2017 continued during the first month of 2018.
In a news release that came out Thursday, the department says that there were 39 homicides in January - 13 fewer than in each of the previous two Januarys. The number of shootings also fell from over 230 in both January 2016 and January of last year to 161 in January of this year. There were also nearly 100 fewer shooting victims in January than the previous two Januarys.
The department says that January also saw an expansion into two more police districts of technology that helps police better identify areas where crimes might be committed and respond quicker to shooting incidents.
