China orders Muji to destroy catalog over 'problem map'

BEIJING (AP) - Japanese retailer Muji has been ordered by Chinese authorities to destroy a catalog with a map that Beijing complained mislabels Taiwan and omits disputed islands, joining a string of companies rebuked for commercial materials that fail to reflect China's territorial claims.

The national surveying administration complained the map showing locations of Muji stores in a furniture catalog distributed in the southwestern city of Chongqing failed to show the Diaoyu Islands. The agency said the map contained "serious errors" in regard to Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory, but gave no details.

The agency said Muji was ordered to recall and destroy the catalogs.

Earlier, Chinese regulators ordered hotel keeper Marriott, fashion brand Zara and other companies to overhaul websites that showed Taiwan and Hong Kong as separate countries.
