BUTLER, Ind. (AP) - Police say people jumped from second-story windows to escape a downtown fire in a northeastern Indiana town and officers rescued an unconscious person.
Butler Assistant Police Chief Matt Traster says police officers caught two adults jumping to flee the midday fire Tuesday in the town about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Fort Wayne. He tells The (Auburn) Star officers then went to a second-floor apartment, where they found the unconscious person.
Fire officials told WANE-TV at least six people were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries suffered in the blaze. They say two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation. It wasn't clear whether those officers were the same ones who rescued the unconscious person.
Fire departments from across northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio battled the blaze.
