Prosecutor: Teen fired 7 shots near Palatine High School

A Palatine teen was ordered held on $250,000 bail and 24-hour home monitoring Monday on charges related to what prosecutors described as a gang-related shooting last week near Palatine High School.

Luis Corona, 18, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Corona faces up to 30 years in prison.

The school resource officer was at the Palatine High School bus lot about 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23. As students were leaving, he heard several "pops" and called for backup.

The resource officer ran toward the popping sounds and saw four males and one female, who were the shooter's targets, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Caitlin Casey. No one was injured.

A different witness told the officer he saw a group of people running with a male chasing after them, Casey said. The witness reported seven shots fired.

Police recovered seven shell casings and three fired rounds, Casey said. One round entered a home, but no one was injured, Casey said.

One of the people identified as a target reported seeing Corona get out of a Nissan Altima, which police traced to him, Casey said.

After obtaining a search warrant, police recovered 14.8 grams of suspected marijuana from the car, she said.

According to Casey, Corona told police he was armed with a handgun when he saw the group walking. Corona told them he fired after he saw one of the males put his hand under his jacket, Casey said.

He also told authorities he burned the clothes he was wearing and dismantled the gun, Casey said.

Corona, whom police called an admitted gang member, next appears in court on Feb. 22.
