Two men charged in Elmhurst burglaries

DuPage County authorities have charged two men in connection with a series of car and garage burglaries last week in Elmhurst.

Fernando Galvan, 20, of the 5100 block of West 23rd Street in Cicero, and Tyler Almaguer, 22, of the 2100 block of North Melvina in Chicago, each face one court of burglary and one count of burglary to a motor vehicle stemming from the Jan. 25 break-ins.

Authorities say the pair traveled to Elmhurst last week intending to burglarize cars. They stole items from several unlocked vehicles and entered several unattached garages, taking items including a smoker, ammunition and hunting gear, charges allege.

An investigation led by the Elmhurst Police Department led to Galvan and Almaguer, who were taken into custody Friday, officials said.

"We have seen a rash lately of individuals traveling into DuPage County to commit crimes," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in an announcement of the charges. "Make no mistake, the quick identification and apprehension of the defendants in this case sends the message to anyone even considering this type of behavior that if you do, you will be caught, you will be charged and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Galvan and Almaguer appeared in bond court Saturday morning, where Judge Alex McGimpsey set bail at $20,000 for Galvan and $30,000 for Almaguer. They're scheduled to return to court Feb. 26.

Additional charges may be forthcoming, authorities said.
