Boys swimming and diving: Fremd passes another test, at Prospect
Fremd's boys swimming and diving team remains undefeated in dual meets after earning a 111-74 victory over host Prospect on Friday.
The Vikings managed to win all three relays plus six of the eight individual swimming events, plus diving, where senior Zach Mega won with a score of 240.90.
Those top Fremd swimmers were junior Yoochan Lee in the 50-yard freestyle (22.43) and 100 free (48.85), Max Li in the 200 free (1:55.96), Evan Stegall in the 100 fly (56.94), Shoya Yamazaki in the 200 IM (2:11.70) and Paul Ponte in the 100 back (56.53).
Prospect senior Jake Kosinski took top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.88), and Knights freshman Kevin Soltys won the 500 free (5:08.63).
Hersey d. Schaumburg: Huskies senior Michael Petro is the fastest competitor to race the 100 butterfly in the waters at Schaumburg High School, as his 50.76 bettered the standard set by Prospect's Tom Cole.
Hersey won the meet 118-68; Petro also had the top effort in the 200 IM (1:55.88) and legs on the winning 200 and 400 free relays.
Schaumburg had a record-breaking senior of its own in action, as Matt Soltau won the 100 free in a pool-best 48.50. He was also tops in the 50 free in 22.31, just ahead of Hersey's Gavin Hill (22.49).
Another terrific effort came in diving, where Hersey senior Nick Nocita won with a season-best score of 276.15.
Buffalo Grove d. Palatine: The host Bison came up with a 1-2 finish in the meet-ending 400 free relay to pull away from the Pirates in a 98-88 decision.
Junior Daniel Verdico won both the 200 free (1:51.88) and the 100 breast (1:06.40) and had legs on both of the Bison's victorious free relays, and Andy Gontko was tops for BG in the 50 free (23.17).
Palatine had the winning medley relay and got a pair of first-place effort from senior Sean O'Brien in the 100 free (50.59) and 100 back (58.69). Other Pirates winners were Stefan Filip in the 200 IM (2:12.03), Henry Gabriel in the 100 fly (1:01.10), Christian Snyder in the 500 free (5:18.44) and Campbell Boston in diving (177.20).
Hoffman Estates d. Wheeling: Senior Greg Baranov won two individual events and the Hawks swept the relays in a 113-66 decision hosted by the Wildcats.
Baranov's wins came in the 200 IM (2:10.61) and 100 free (52.12). Other Hawks winners were Mark Heitkotter in the 50 free (23.55), EJ Merza in the 100 fly (1:04.76), Neil Polzin in the 200 free (2:07.35) and Fritz Nastor in the 100 back (1:12.81).
Wheeling's Nick Konstantos was tops in the 100 breast in a season-best 1:02.10, and the Wildcats' Leo Monaxios won the 500 free (6:34.55).
Conant d. Elk Grove: The visiting Cougars came away with a 132-48 triumph as junior Justin Lim won both the 200 IM (2:11.13) and 100 fly (54.49).
Conant's Kyle Jones produced a superb winning score of 262.20 in diving; other Cougars winners included Jake Lydon in the 200 free, Bryan Cho in the 100 free, Alex Hirjoi in the 100 back and Dylan Pokorny in the 100 breast.
Elk Grove junior Adrian Wlodarz won the 50 free (23.83) and was second in the 500, close behind senior teammate Mike Kulpa (5:18.46).
