Elmhurst house uninhabitable after fire

No one was injured during a Thursday morning blaze that left a house uninhabitable in Elmhurst.

Firefighters responded at 9:42 a.m. to a report of smoke in the basement of the one-and-a-half-story home on the 800 block of North Howard Avenue. Crews from Addison, Bensenville, Villa Park and York Center also responded.

When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the roofline, officials said. The fire was extinguished at 10:27 a.m.

Authorities said the fire may have started in or around the fireplace. The cause is still under investigation.

Damage estimates weren't immediately available.
