Proposal calls for solar farm along Chicago-area airport

LAKE IN THE HILLS, Ill. (AP) - A village in suburban Chicago could receive $20,000 annually for the next 21 years as part of a plan to create a solar farm at its airport.

The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald reports Saturday that village officials have approved Cenergy Power's proposal to lease about 10 acres (4 hectares) along Lake in the Hills Airport.

Lake in the Hills economic development coordinator George Hahne says discussions with Cenergy Power began in September. The California-based company would pay for design, construction and maintenance costs and $2,000 an acre per year for 21 years.

The $20,000 per year would allow the village to offset airport operational costs and future project expenditures.

The proposal still has to be approved by regulatory agencies.
