Rolling Meadows, Des Plaines police dogs get donated vests

Rolling Meadows and Des Plaines police dogs are expected to receive protective vests donated by a national nonprofit group.

Massachusetts-based Vested Interest in K9s Inc. will deliver the bullet and stab protective vests in the next eight to 10 weeks, officials said. Each vest is valued at about $2,000 and has a five-year warranty.

Rolling Meadows' dog, Scar, hit the streets with Officer Chris Don last month, and Des Plaines' dog, Bane, joined with Officer Steve Dickson in 2014.

Since being established in 2009, the nonprofit has provided more than 2,700 protective vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of some $2.3 million. New police dogs and those with expired vests are eligible to participate in the program.
