Deerfield Resident Mio Sota Wins Major Beauty Award, International Recognition!

Mio Sota, born in Japan and raised right here in Deerfield (and still here, as her parents are in Deerfield) -- is a young, experienced hairstylist with Chicago's Trio Salon, and a member of (not for profit) Cosmetologists Chicago is on roll and making a name for herself - and Chicago - on the international beauty stage! In July she received NAHA (North American Hairstyling Award) for Hairstylist of the Year 2017 from the not-for-profit Professional Beauty Association ... and now she is the only stylist from America to be named winner of the Goldwell Color Zoom 2017 International Gold award ... to win this honor Mio competed against 97 stylist finalists representing 38 countries! Winning this award, mean that Mio will be traveling the world teaching other hairdressers the hot hairstyles for 2018 and how to achieve the new color trends!

"We're so proud of Mio," notes Alex Ioannou, owner of the Trio Salon, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. "Her awards provide huge validation to her skill and talent as a hairdresser. Clients want her opinion and trust her to give them what really works for them."

Though her clientele includes many everyday folk, Mio has much experience in working with celebrities, including bands Black Sabbath, B52s, Backstreet Boys; and actresses Rosanna Arquette and Rachael McAdams. She has done Fashion Week in New York, and just was stylist for a week for internationally renowned artist Takashi Murakami, who was at the Museum of Contemporary Art for one week.

"I like to show clients how they can take home techniques and do themselves ... the looks appear complicated and expensive ... but as a salon professional, I can teach how to get a great look between salon visits. My clients now are looking for a nice color change for the Holidays and into the new year: the trend is deeper, rich autumn tones. The Holiday trend is longer wavy hair for the holidays, as this is always glamorous ... but one should be open to a change for the New Year. I believe in slowly evolving from a long to short look, maybe over 2-3 haircuts rather than a sudden change. This way we can also introduce texture and color! As we move into Spring 2018, the look will be the beachy soft waves that are still popular now ... but the trend for spring is either smoother or curlier!"

Mio's forecast for 2018 hot hair trends - many of which are influenced by celebrities:

• Creating a fringe is such a great way to refresh your overall look, in only few snips! We've seen a lot of the side swept bangs so it's cool and refreshing to see celebrities like Kerry Washington, Zendaya, and Penelope Cruz rocking out each of these completely different types of fringes. Kerry went for more bold, blunt bangs, which gives a very edgy French chic feel. Penelope rocks a more piecier fringe. And by parting it in the center like her, you can achieve a sophisticated feel and avoid the "cute" vibe. A lot of people are afraid to try it on curly hair but when you dry cut it to avoid taking too much length off, bangs on textured hair is absolutely beautiful too as you can see here on Zendaya: https://www.standard.co.uk/s3fs-public/styles/story_large/public/thumbnails/image/2017/08/14/11/teenchoice.jpg

• Due to the more aggressive color techniques that have been on trend in the past few years, such as balayage or ombre, in order to get rid of the frazzled bleached ends, I believe there is going to be a lot of people going shorter, to above the shoulders and also embracing the natural texture to let the hair rest from all of the heat styling tools. Parting textured hair in the center gives a very sophisticated yet flirty vibe as seen here on Gabrielle Union: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/89/76/0b/89760bbd4cb379d0e6ca10fde47ceee8.jpg

• Cate Blanchet, Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian - straying away from the balayage and ombre, they have just the right amount of dark roots coming through for a very 90's chic edge. Here's Selena Gomez, rocking this style: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/PJPi56pB0YU/maxresdefault.jpg

• Hailee Steinfield, Kylie Jenner - the "I just got out of the shower" wet hair look has been popping up a lot on fashion runway shows and red carpets these days. This has become such a high fashion 'do, it'll be a perfect style to try out for your next holiday party. Slick back gives a cool rock chic, greaser vibe, which is edgy and empowering. For an evening sophistication, side part version would be very elegant. It works perfectly for straight or textured hair.
