Deer hunt still coming for Bloomington nature preserve
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Officials in Bloomington say they're waiting for a contractor to schedule the planned deer cull in a city nature preserve.
The city parks board in August approved a contract with White Buffalo Inc. for sharpshooters to kill up to 100 deer this winter at the Griffy Lake preserve.
Parks Department natural resources manager Steve Cotter tells The (Bloomington) Herald-Times that scheduling of the deer cull will depend on the contractor's availability and the weather. The contract allows the hunt to be conducted between Nov. 15 and Feb. 28.
Officials supporting the cull cited evidence showing an overabundance of deer is hurting plant growth within the 1,200-acre preserve on the city's north side. Some residents against the hunt questioned whether the area has a serious deer problem.
