Learn about 'Elgin During the Vietnam War' at Gail Borden

The Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin, is screening the parts of the 2017 documentary series "The Vietnam War," written by Geoffrey C. Ward and directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Episode one "Déjà vu: 1858-1961," focuses on how Vietnam emerges independent but divided into North and South after a century of French occupation. It will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5. It will be followed by episode four "Resolve: 1966-1967" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12. In this episode, U.S. soldiers discover Vietnam is unlike their fathers' war, while the antiwar movement grows.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, local historian Jerry Turnquist recalls Elgin during the Vietnam War as told through the newspapers of the time and images from the Elgin History Museum. The program will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the main library's Meadows Community Rooms. Register for the program at gailborden.info/register, by calling (847) 429-4597 or stopping by the library.
