Lake County flood victims will get help applying for loans

Low-interest disaster loans are going to be made available to Lake County residents. Starting Thursday representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration will begin helping people complete their applications.

Help will be available at the Lake County Emergency Operations Center at 1303 N. Milwaukee Ave in Libertyville through Tuesday, Nov. 21. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. but it will be closed on Sunday.

Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may now include a safe room or storm shelter to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren of Plano encouraged residents in his district to apply for the loans.

"Illinois residents and businesses have suffered significant loss following the severe storms and flooding in July," Hultgren said in news release. "I am pleased the SBA responded to Illinois needs and have located outreach centers in Lake County to serve Lake, McHenry and Cook counties."
