Man pleads guilty in fatal Antioch Township heroin overdose

A Waukegan man faces 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to drug charges stemming from the fatal heroin overdose of an Antioch Township man in 2016.

Darrin S. Reed, 33, of the 600 block of North Martin Avenue, admitted guilt to a charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance, said defense attorney Greg Nikitas. He's scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 20.

As part of plea agreement reached last week, Lake County prosecutors dismissed additional charges, including drug-induced homicide, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated fleeing police.

Nikitas declined to comment beyond confirming the terms of the plea deal.

The charges stemmed from an investigation into the fatal overdose of Joseph Bond, 25, who was found dead June 13, 2016 on the 26000 block of West Catalpa Road in Antioch. Antioch Township.

Police said they later determined that Reed was responsible for selling Bond the heroin that led to his death.

Reed remains held in the Lake County jail on $950,000 bail pending his sentencing next month.
