Barrington Area Conservation Trust takes part in habitat restoration
As part of larger regional and national efforts, the Barrington Area Conservation Trust is creating steppingstone habitats in the community for the breeding and migration of monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
Throughout this past year, the Barrington Area Conservation Trust has worked with community members and organizations in establishing 34 monarch gardens throughout the community.
Additionally, students from Barrington Area Conservation Trust classrooms and summer interns have planted more than 1,000 milkweed and other native plants at two preserves.
In November, students from Barrington High School, as well as local Scout troops, will be furthering Barrington Area Conservation Trust's efforts through a large scale seeding project dispersing 47.6 pounds of pollinator seed mix at Pederson Preserve.
This 5.6 acre parcel of land is adjacent to Flint Creek and across from Barrington High School. Funding for this project is provided, in part, from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and the Barrington Junior Women's Club, as well as donor designated gifts.
Restoration seeding days at Pederson Preserve include:
• Tuesday, Nov. 14, (rain date Nov. 16): Through ongoing programming and collaboration with Barrington High School, 25 students from the Investigations in Biology classes will be seeding the property from 8:40-10 a.m.
• Sunday, Nov. 19: Participants from Junior Explorers Post 21 and Girl Scout Troop 592 from Barrington, as well as Cub Scout Pack 399 from Hoffman Estates, will be seeding the property and helping with habitat restoration from 10 a.m. to noon. Register online as a volunteer at bactrust.org, if interested.
Pederson Preserve is at the southwest corner of Lake-Cook and Hart roads, across from Barrington High School.
