Rolling Meadows plans Kirchoff Road resurfacing
Rolling Meadows is planning a $2.2 million resurfacing of Kirchoff Road between Hicks and Wilke roads - the main thoroughfare through the city's downtown - in 2018.
City officials hope to get project approval from the Illinois Department of Transportation that would allow 80 percent of construction costs and half the engineering costs to be paid with federal dollars.
The city has budgeted $500,000 for the project in its 2018 budget.
If approved by the state, resurfacing would be scheduled for late summer and fall of next year.
In anticipation, the city has contracted with Christopher B. Burke Engineering for field surveys this fall and additional engineering design work this winter, in contracts authorized by the city council this week.
Kirchoff is a local road controlled by the city, but prior to 1996 it was under the jurisdiction of the state. As a result, the city is still eligible for federal funds, administered by IDOT, according to Fred Vogt, the city's public works director.
The portion of Kirchoff east of Salt Creek was last resurfaced in 1995; the portion west of there was done a few years later.
Vogt said 20 years is about the average life span of the road surface.
