Police: No armed robber involved in St. Charles shooting

A Thursday afternoon shooting in St. Charles did not happen the way the victim reported it to police, officials said Friday morning.

Law enforcement officials locked down the city, particularly local schools, after a report of an armed burglar in the 3600 block of Grand View Court at 2:25 p.m. A response to the house found a 28-year-old man with a non-life-threatening shoulder wound. The man told police an armed intruder shot him.

But interviews with numerous witnesses and evidence examination have now led police to believe there was no armed intruder at the residence. Police are continuing their investigation, in consultation with the Kane County state's attorney's office, to determine if any criminal wrongdoing occurred.

"I want to ensure the public that they are safe and not in danger," St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said. "We believe this incident was isolated and contained to the home in question."

Police officials also apologized for any inconvenience caused by "an overabundance of caution" used to lock down the community during the search for the alleged shooter and investigation of the residence.

The man who suffered the gunshot wound is receiving treatment for the injury at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
