Elgin Vineyard hosts popular Friday night ministry

Vineyard Church of Elgin has been opening its doors to feed the hungry on weekday mornings for years, but more recently the church began inviting these same guests for dinner on Friday nights, too.

The Street Reach ministry, as it is known, was started a few years ago by representatives of another church but officially came under the wing of Elgin Vineyard in 2016.

Sixty to 90 people come to Street Reach each week to enjoy teaching and discipleship, discussion and prayer; one highlight of the evening is always the meal prepared by a professional chef and other volunteers.

Several women have been arriving early to take part in a pre-dinner Bible study, "God's Grand Story."

This study offers an overview of the Bible and explains God's purposes for giving it.

"Practicing Righteousness," the Rev. Tom Severson's sermon this weekend at Elgin Vineyard, 220 Division St., is based on the Book of 1 John.

Rev. Severson preaches Sunday, Oct. 29, at both the 9 and 11 a.m. services about how to build rhythms that establish a righteous life. Everyone is welcome. Coffee service is offered downstairs at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

The public also is invited to a free "Trunk-or-Treat" at Elgin Vineyard on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Kids are encouraged to come in costume, with games, candy, popcorn and hot chocolate for everyone.
