Rabbi Joe Black returns to his roots for concert

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, Rabbi Joe Black, a pioneer of upbeat, message driven, contemporary Jewish music, will give a concert at Temple Chai, a Reform Jewish congregation in Long Grove.

Rabbi Black has performed at congregations and communities around the world and his albums and videos have received praise from The New York Times, Parent's Choice, The American Library Journal, and The Coalition for Quality Children's Videos.

His music continues to be featured in numerous compilations of current contemporary Jewish music CDs.

Black is also a published author of prose and poetry for all ages. His most recent book is "There Once Was a Man from Canaan: The Five Books of Limerick." He has written two children's books for the PJ Library, a nationally recognized Jewish reading incentive program.

In his early television career, he starred as Tiny Tov in the Magic Door Sunday children's series.

Black has a special history with Temple Chai as its first song leader.

"I remember when the [temple's] building was finally built in Long Grove and how excited everybody was to finally have a place of their own to pray," said Black in Temple Chai's "First Forty Years" memory book.

"Those early years were filled with spirituality, community and love. They made a huge impression on me, and contributed to my decision to become a rabbi."

Black's concert is part of the temple's Levinson Scholar-in-Residence Weekend. Tickets for the Saturday night Joe Black concert are $36 for sponsors; $20 for general admission; $10 for students and children ages 11 and younger.
