Boys cross country: Burns helps Lake Zurich boys win Palatine regional

Boys cross country

Palatine regional: At Deer Grove Forest Preserve, led by race runner-up and senior Patrick Burns, Lake Zurich captured the Class 3A regional wit 50 points, comfortably ahead of Dundee-Crown (71).

Palatine (81), Barrington (91), Cary-Grove (137) and McHenry (148) also advanced to next Saturday's Schaumburg sectional at Busse Woods.

Grant (227) finished ninth, but the Bulldogs advanced sophomore Justin Splitt (25th).

Burns' time of 15:25 was bettered only by Barrington senior Nick Laning (15:01).

Lake Zurich also featured senior Jacob Bieniekin sixth (15:43), freshman Jack Gilboy in ninth (15:47), senior Sean Ginn in 12th (15:52) and sophomore Adam Cupples in 21st (16:09). Bears sophomore Patrick Hart was 22nd (16:11), and senior Matt Schwartz placed 33rd (16:34).

Antioch regional: At Fox River Park in Wisconsin, Vernon Hills won the Class 2A regional with 69 points. Antioch (81), Lakes (85), Prairie Ridge (114), Wauconda (131) and Grayslake Central (134) also earned berths in next Saturday's Kaneland sectional.

Antioch sophomore Charlie Smith won the race in 16:13.

Vernon Hills placed junior James McDonald (fourth, 16:32) and senior Theodore Chen (eighth, 17:10) in the top 10. Senior Evan Webber (12th, 17:29), junior Cameron Overbeck (21st, 17:40) and freshman Alex Utsis (24th, 17:47) rounded out the Cougars' scoring.

Antioch's other scorers were junior Mike Volkmar (11th, 17:24), senior Andrew Johnson (17th, 17:35), senior Joe Sculuca (23rd, 17:45) and senior Alex Besson (29th, 17:52). Lakes juniors Owen Wenberg (16:56) and Ethan Schommer (17:07) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Sophomore R.J. Migas (19th, 17:38), junior Charlie Halberg (26th, 17:48) and junior Jack Erwin (27th, 17:48) completed the Eagles' scoring.

Wauconda senior Adam Fox was fifth (16:55). The Bulldogs' top five also featured senior Mickey Landvick (16th, 17:34), junior Nick Brunn (25th, 17:48), senior Sam Rayzman (42nd, 18:36) and senior Mike Messacar (43rd, 18:40).

Grayslake Central was led by senior Eli Minsky, who placed third (16:28). Senior Luke Reblin (22nd, 17:44), junior Ty Sato (32nd, 18:01), junior Roman Tovar (38th, 18:27) and sophomore Dominic Giannini (39th, 18:29) finished the Rams' scoring.

The at-large sectional qualifiers included junior Connor Riss (second, 16:23) and sophomore Brandt Batteau (10th, 17:20) of Grayslake North and Carmel seniors Jack Teehan (14th, 17:31) and Alex Slack (15th, 17:33).
