How many have to die?

Someone please remind me why semi-automatic weapons are legal. I have written the Herald two other times over the years after mass shootings, and I still wonder how many people have to die in a matter of minutes before we prohibit these weapons that serve no other purpose but to kill many people quickly. Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Orlando Pulse Nightclub, Aurora movie theater, Stockton schoolyard, and now Vegas. Exactly what does the head count have to be before these weapons of war are prohibited?
