The issue is 'qualified'

The founding fathers established the Electoral College in the Constitution as a compromise between election of the president by a vote in Congress and election of the president by a vote of qualified citizens. Key words here "qualified citizens." If you wish to pursue eliminating the Electoral College, you need to come up with a method of insuring that only those qualified vote. Voter ID would be a good start.
