Boys soccer: St. Edward makes it 20-0
The St. Edward boys soccer team continues to show it belongs in the conversation as one of the area's elite, downing Metro Suburban foe Ridgewood 7-3 Thursday to move to 20-0 for the season.
AJ Franklin's hat trick placed him at 51 goals for the season, which is 20 off the state record set in 1976 by Robert Meschback of Gordon Tech. Franklin also added 1 assist while Will Gaston tallied 2 goals and Josh Johansen had 1 goal and 3 assists. Emilio Martinez rounded out the scoring while Chase Brieger added an assist.
Dundee-Crown 2, McHenry 1: One other team refusing to lose is D-C, as the Chargers rallied from behind to beat McHenry in Fox Valley Conference action after trailing 1-0 at half. Daniel Perez provided the heroics for D-C this time, which improved to 13-0-2 and 5-0 in the FVC. Perez scored twice in the final 4 minutes of the game while Julian Ajroja provided an assist on Perez's game-winner in the final minute. Keeper Damian Smiech topped 8 saves.
Geneva 1, St. Charles North 1: Eric Anderson helped the Vikings (8-4-2, 1-2-1) salvage an Upstate Eight River tie with his second half goal. Nico Ignacio provided the assist and keeper Jeffrey Bode made 3 saves in net. North (9-2-4, 1-1-2), after wining PepsiCo, has lost and tied in its last 2 matches.
Jacobs 2, Cary-Grove 0: The Golden Eagles (10-5-1, 5-1) got back on track in FVC action against the Trojans (3-7-1, 2-4) thanks to Noah Melick and John O'Connor, who scored goals in the first half.
CL South 5, CL Central 0: After an upset of Jacobs on Tuesday, the Gators (8-8-1, 2-3) used that momentum to handle their crosstown rival in FVC action. Alex Canfield scored twice while John Wruck, Nikolas Getzinger, Oscar Campos also scored goals. Nick Langdon provided 2 assists and Thomas Ciezadlo had 1. Four saves were needed for goalie Brandon Gorka to get the shutout.
Bartlett 4, Glenbard West 3: First time really was the lucky charm for the Hawks (3-10-3), who never hosted a game at Bartlett High School, yet still won with a goal in the 71st minute by Sergio Navarrete. Rudy Reyes (1 goal, 1 assist) and Hernan Garcia (1 goal, 2 assists) shined, while Oscar Soto added a goal. Brandon Palid helped dish the game-winning assist.
Huntley 2, Hampshire 0: Adam Kaster and Raul Valldares were bright spots for the Red Raiders (6-11, 2-3) in their FVC win over archrival Hampshire. Each scored goals while Valladares had 1 assist. Also assisting was Anesu Chindoa while Andrew Fucler in goal notched 4 saves for the shutout.
Harvest Christian 2, South Beloit 0: In Northeastern Athletic action, the Lions went to 7-3-2 overall and 4-1 in conference thanks to Haiden Butchko's goal. Victor Croitoru added an insurance goal while both Isaac Martinez and Matt Baron added assists. Baron had 4 saves to boot in goal.
Kaneland 1, Morris 1: The Knights (10-3-3, 2-1-2) nearly had a NI Big 12 win in the books but a late goal by Morris in the 72nd settled matters in a tie. John McCaffrey broke up a 0-0 tie at the half with his goal in the 57th minute, which was assisted by Brian Bartholomew.
Woodstock 3, Burlington Central 2: The Rockets fell short in this Kishwaukee River contest, as Jack Schramme's 2 goals were not enough. CJ Heinz totaled 1 assists.
