Even in protest, show respect for our flag
There are so many crucial educational issues to comment on, yet I find myself unable to be silent on the issue of respect for the American flag. In no way would I condone physically manhandling a student, but I am dismayed at the concept of protesting, whatever issue, by not respecting the American flag.
This is America, and for all its flaws, it would seem that more people are trying to get here than leave. The Michigan school district has acknowledged a student's right to not say the pledge. That should be enough. If the flag is so disrespected that it is necessary to sit, or kneel, then perhaps this is not the right place to live. Change does not occur through disrespect.
Patriotism does not speak against any culture, ethnicity, etc. It speaks to love and respect for country. Without patriotism, how does our country survive internal or external conflicts?
That doesn't mean we are not making mistakes. There is turmoil. There are incredibly polarizing political views. But, for most, a strong and healthy country is the goal.
Patriotism should be advocated and advanced in our public schools. There is no one answer as to what is the best solution, on almost any topic, for the future health and well-being of America. You can be against an issue without losing respect for the primary symbol of the United States of America - the American flag.
Be silent if you must, our sons and daughters have died to give you that right. But stand, out of respect for the symbol of our country as a whole, and then work to change the issues you feel that need to be changed.
